FROSTBURG-Eugene “Gene” Schurg, Sr, 85 of Frostburg died Saturday, June 11th at his home surrounded by family. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Jenkins) Schurg. Born September 20, 1930 in Zilhman, the son of George Schurg and Martha Donas, one of 12 children. Carl Schurg of Vale Summit is his only surviving sibling. Brothers Harry, George, Pete, Francie, Johnny, Elmer and sisters Pearl Wiland, Helen Andrews, Dorothy Pappas, Alverna Carpenter all preceded their brother Gene in death. Mr. Schurg is survived by his three children; Gene Schurg, Jr of Vienna, VA, Ken Schurg of Frostburg, and Alverna Skidmore and husband Kevin of Lonaconing; three grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his longtime companion Dorothy Schurg. Mr. Schurg was a Veteran of the Korean War and worked over 35 years for Stroehman (Orts) Baking company in Cumberland before retiring in 1982. Gene enjoyed gardening and grew some of the best tomatoes and vegetables for friends and family. The family would like to thank the Western Maryland Health System and Hospice for their care and support over the last month. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Monday, June 13 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. with Partor Rick Riley officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the graveside.
