FROSTBURG – Donald Eugene Kunkle, 81, of Frostburg went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Donald was the son of the late Robert Jacob Kunkle and Loretta V. (Shaw) Kunkle. He is preceded in death by his daughter Beverly Nadene Kunkle. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Marie Kunkle, his daughter, Patricia A. Kunkle of Frostburg; and a special nephew, Bobby Winebrenner. Donald was Executive Chef at Frostburg State University during the 1980’s. He also served as Executive Chef at Maplehurst Country Club. Even when he was off work, he was called upon for private catering. Many people would call and ask dad for quarts of soup or sauces to accompany their own dinner. After retiring, he still worked at Food Lion and Giant Eagle because he loved to work with the public. Donald was a devoted husband and father and loved to spend time with his family. He was the greatest Notre Dame fan ever and loved the Fighting Irish. His favorite coach was Knute Rockne. He received a Christmas card from Lou Holtz, which was his second favorite coach. He loved gardening, and before he broke his hip he loved cutting his grass and planting flowers. He was also very proud of his yard decorations. “Dad will be missed and there will not be a day go by that I won’t feel that part of my heart went with him that day.” Family and friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 10 am at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg with Father Eric Gauchat, O.F.M. Cap. serving as Celebrant. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
